You step on the path, and it’s immediately sweet underfoot. You can feel the sugar crystals coming straight up through your shoes, and it tingles. It makes you lightheaded and a bit giggly, which is a very foreign feeling. You haven’t giggled since fifth grade, truth be told, but the bubbling sweetness of the strawberry square bursts through your bloodstream, and you can’t help it. It’s like the corners of your mouth have been stapled to the corners of your eyes, and to stop grinning would rip your face in half. You muster every ounce of will in your body and order it to immediately step off the path, but, it’s slowly, glacially slowly, that you inch towards the edge. The icing slides a bit underfoot, as you finally break away. But, anything is better than the sugary-heroin charge of the jollyrancher-lined candy path. You wonder what would happen if you licked it.
